Tech Industry Layoffs in 2024: A Growing Concern with Silent Layoffs on the Rise

The year 2024 has been tough for the tech industry, with more than 80,000 IT professionals losing their jobs. According to Layoffs.fyi, a staggering 98,834 employees have already been laid off by 337 tech companies in the first half of the year alone.

As companies continue to focus on reducing operational costs, layoffs remain a constant threat. But now, a more subtle and concerning trend has emerged—silent layoffs.

In the Indian IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) sector, silent layoffs are becoming increasingly common. This practice involves quietly pressuring employees to leave without public announcements. According to the All India IT & ITeS Employees' Union (AIITEU), around 20,000 tech professionals were impacted by this tactic in 2023, and the actual figures may be much higher.

The combination of overt layoffs and silent dismissals is placing enormous stress on IT workers, highlighting the need for greater transparency and support in the industry.

Layoffs.fyi के डेटा के मुताबिक, इस साल की पहली छमाही में ही 337 टेक कंपनियों ने 98,834 कर्मचारियों को नौकरी से निकाल दिया है। कंपनियाँ लगातार परिचालन लागत कम करने पर ध्यान दे रही हैं, जिससे नौकरियों में और कटौती हो रही है। नौकरी से निकाले जाने का डर पहले से ही IT कर्मचारियों को परेशान कर रहा है, लेकिन एक नया और ज़्यादा खतरनाक चलन बढ़ रहा है - चुपचाप छंटनी।

भारतीय IT और IT-सक्षम सेवाएँ (ITeS) क्षेत्र तेज़ी से इस चलन का सहारा ले रहा है, जिसमें कर्मचारियों पर बिना बताए नौकरी छोड़ने का दबाव डालना शामिल है। अखिल भारतीय आईटी एवं आईटीईएस कर्मचारी संघ (एआईआईटीईयू) ने खुलासा किया कि 2023 में लगभग 20,000 प्रौद्योगिकी पेशेवर इस तरह की अघोषित छंटनी से प्रभावित होंगे, तथा वास्तविक संख्या इससे भी अधिक होने का संदेह है।

Beware of the Fraudster- I almost got caught 😳

In this competitive era where everyone is trying to get the best in their lives doing hard work to achieve it there are people who would spend their hours of time stalking , to keep an eye on your every moment and would look for that one moment when they can do fraud to catch you. So, it happened to me but luckily I did the double check and got saved myself.

So, I recently received an email from my company's CEO, Shekhar, stating that he is gone somewhere and unable to complete an urgent transfer for which he need my assistance and has asked me to make the transfer on his behalf for 35k, which he will refund me next month. You can call it a coincidence or their strong research but he was actually out somewhere, but something seems fishy to me about the new email, which was of his name but was from a personal account, and we always used official emails for communication, so I started checking my daily work emails and responded to that to get more information on this, and he had actually shared the bank details.

I confirmed it with Shekhar, who stated no, it is not him and is a legitimate fake. However, I continued to converse with this false profile, who insisted on telling me that he was unable to communicate or connect due to network troubles. So it exemplifies how individuals misuse technology and their bright minds. He must have done some research on my title as CEO. I'm not sure how many people were genuinely caught up in these scams. Always double these things, especially when it comes to money.
