QANTAS will axe another 500 engineering jobs in Victoria and Sydney as the airline begins to enact plans to reduce its bases for heavy aircraft maintenance in Australia from two to one.
About 200 of the latest job cuts will be to line-maintenance roles at Qantas' jet base at Sydney Airport and the remainder mostly from heavy maintenance at Avalon Airport near Geelong.

The Jobs to be cut in Victoria are mostly engineers who have been reconfiguring nine of Qantas' 18-strong fleet of Boeing 747-400 Aircraft. The revamp to the last jumbo will be completed by the end of this month.

About 250 of the 263 workers to go at Avalon Airport are contractors.
Qantas will also shed about 40 jobs from its defence services operation at RAAF Richmond in Sydney, which has been maintaining the Defence Force’s C130 Hercules. As well, about 11 jobs will go when Qantas closes its engineering training facility in Melbourne, and shifts the work to Sydney.
The engineers' union has claimed the job cuts will threaten safety – an assertion rejected by Qantas.
The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association’s federal secretary, Steve Purvinas, said he expected the Qantas maintenance base at Avalon – one of two remaining in Australia – to be closed next year.
"Given the rising number of errors and the potentially serious nature of some of these, we're calling on Qantas to reverse these job cuts," he said.
Qantas has repeatedly flagged that it will eventually close the Avalon base and centralise heavy maintenance in Brisbane but will not put a timeframe on it.
The latest cuts take the total number of jobs axed from Qantas’s engineering operations this year to about 1260, and is a further blow to Victoria's already battered manufacturing industries.
However, Qantas will boost its engineering workforce at Brisbane Airport by a further 100, and the airline emphasised on Thursday that the latest cuts will result in a net loss of about 400 jobs.
Qantas has accelerated the sale or closure this year of what it deems non-core assets such as catering and engineering units. Last month it sold its half share of road freight business Star Track Express.
In August Qantas closed its heavy maintenance base at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport, resulting in the loss of 422 jobs. A further 113 positions have already gone from the base at Avalon, and the latest cuts will leave the engineering workforce there at 340 – just over half its size at the start of the year.
The airline has decided to cut jobs in Sydney because it believes it has an oversupply of line-maintenance engineers. They undertake day-to-day servicing of aircraft.
The chief executive of Qantas' domestic operations, Lyell Strambi, said the airline's fleet of more modern planes had reduced the amount of maintenance required.
The cost of its heavy maintenance was more than 30 per cent higher than Qantas' competitors, and the airline needed to close the gap to secure its "future viability", he said.
But the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union accused Qantas of back-flipping on commitments it had made to keep maintenance jobs. "We will seek to get assurances from Qantas and a clear explanation why they've betrayed workers' trust," the union’s NSW secretary, Tim Ayres, said.
"Ultimately a decision like this is is an attempt to cut corners."

Air Hostess Geetika Sharma suicide case: Gopal Goyal Kanda's MDLR Employee Mr Chanshivroop records statement

Geetika Sharma suicide case: Gopal Kanda's aide records statement

An aide of former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda, who was being interrogated by Delhi Police in the ex-air hostess Geetika Sharma suicide case, recorded his statement before a court here on Wednesday, after he expressed his wish to be a witness in the case.

Kanda's firm MDLR employee Chanshivroop recorded his statement before a magisterial court a day after he made a plea to depose as a witness in the case.

Delhi Police said that Chanshivroop, assistant manager with MDLR, was the person who had gone to Dubai where Geetika was working with Emirates Airlines and told its officials that she had secured a job with MDLR on the basis of fake and forged documents.

The prosecution had also alleged that he had sent fake e-mails to Geetika informing her about extradition proceedings against her in Dubai to pressurise her to join back MDLR.

Chanshivroop gave his statement under the provisions of section 164 of CrPC for recording of confessions and statements a day after he was allowed by additional chief metropolitan magistrate D K Jangala to appear before a magisterial court for the same.

He had moved the court saying he wishes to depose as a witness in the case. Police had said it had no objection to his deposing as witness.

In its charge sheet filed against Kanda and co-accused Aruna Chaddha on October 6, police had said that it will file a supplementary charge sheet as they are still ascertaining the role of Chanshivroop, who, it said, had sent the forged e-mail to Geetika about the alleged extradition proceedings against her in Dubai and also kept a tab on her in the Gulf country.

Both Kanda and Chaddha have been accused of abetting the suicide by Geetika Sharma.

Geetika was found dead on August 5 at her Ashok Vihar residence in North West Delhi. In her August 4 suicide note, the 23-year-old victim had said that she was ending her life due to "harassment" by Kanda and Chaddha.

Delhi Police has chargesheeted the duo for allegedly committing offences under section 306 (abetment to suicide), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 506 (criminal intimidation), 201 (destruction of evidence), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery with intention to cheat), 469 (forgery with intention to harm reputation) and 471 (using forged documents as genuine) of the Indian Penal Code.

They have also been booked under section 66 of the Information Technology Act which deals with hacking of computers. PTI

Captain Robert Glasscock, died Tuesday when his Piper Cherokee Airplane crashed near a small Oklahoma town’s Airport

Piper Cherokee which crashed near Anadarko, a town some 60 miles southwest of Oklahoma City,

A 62-year-old Lubbock man died Tuesday when his airplane crashed near a small Oklahoma town’s airport.

Robert Glasscock, 62, a former local business owner, was the only person aboard the Piper Cherokee which crashed near Anadarko, a town some 60 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, said Lynn Lunsford, a Federal Aviation Administration regional spokesman.

Glasscock had left Crosbyton Municipal Airport Tuesday morning. His flight plan showed his destination to be Anadarko.
Lunsford said Glasscock’s four-seat, single-engine airplane disappeared from radar shortly before 12:15 p.m.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers told the Associated Press the airplane burst into flames when it struck the ground.

Officials said he was planning to visit relatives in Oklahoma.

Because the crash resulted in a death, the NTSB will be the lead agency on the investigation.

Agency spokesman Keith Holloway said there were no new details about the crash, adding a preliminary investigation report could be available as early as next week.

According to a commercial aircraft tracking website, Flight Aware, Glasscock took off at 10:07 a.m., and had expected to arrive at Anadarko at 11:42 a.m.

According to Avalanche-Journal files, Glasscock was a widower whose wife Susan died last December. They had two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Texas Secretary of State records show he was affiliated with a now-defunct business, C&W Restaurant and Fixture Supply.
